Most of my original quilt designs are taken from Traditional blocks, and then I use "tricks" to change the blocks and/or the settings. I like to think they are original ideas, and that I thought every one of them up, but as you know, nothing is new, "under the sun." It's just that when these unfamiliar ideas pop into our heads, we think, "Hey! That's a new one!" and assume it's our own.
This talk is about those "tricks"; how to distort blocks, how to work up unusual settings, how to put together a knock-their-socks-off quilt. In other words, how to make your quilts one-of-a-kind.
One of my favorite teachers was doing a class, showing us how to make the nice, traditional, every-other-block, on point Lady of the Lake quilt and I changed it all around. She said “can’t you ever do things the way you’re supposed to?” Well, apparently not! And guess what? You don’t have to, either.
I took a class from Caryl Bryer Fallert—it opened up a whole new world for me—and one of the things I remember her saying to us was, "I can teach you all my sneaky tricks—but you can’t take my magic." So, even if you faithfully copy each and every design idea that I have to share, your quilt will always be different.
