Fabric Dating Cottons 1850-1920

This workshop celebrates the United States Semiquincentennial in 2026. Join us as we study American cotton prints from the last half of the 19th century. Using antique cotton prints from the era we will explore color, design, use and identification. Using hands on exercises with original fabrics and images we will study fabrics used in clothing and quilts in the decades around 1876. Each participant will leave with a packet of study materials.

Supply List:  (Optional)

  • Small Ruler or tape measure
  • Notebook and Pencil (No ink pens please)
  • Camera
  • Hand magnifier
  • Reference books related to fabric dating
  • One quilt related show and tell item from the era (if time allows)

Cost for the workshop is $50 for MQ members and $70 for non-members

Dawn Cook Ronnigen

Dawn Cook Ronningen is a maker, collector, historian and instructor living in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is the author of, "Antique American Needlework Tools" (Schiffer Publishing 2018) and "Sewing Rolls, Needle Rolls and Huswifs" (2023). Her collections include antique quilts, embroidery, antique and vintage needlework tools, textiles and other related antiques. Her books, classes, lectures and trunk shows include rare examples from her own collections.
